Primitive Piles
A revitalization of a 40,000 sqm recreation center in the Oakwood neighborhood of Venice, California, through the provision of sports activities and spatially rich language of piling primitive solids. Upon discussions with Oakwood residents in Venice, California, it was clear that the new, revitalized Oakwood Recreation Center should encompass the needs of the residents.
They found that the existing center lacked clear entry points and lacked services that catered to the growing multi-cultural and multi-generational demographic of the neighborhood. As such, I propose a new recreation center infused with sport facilities that not only cater to multiple generations and disabled residents, but also strengthen the sense of commmunity within Oakwood. A spatially rich formal language is employed to develop Oakwood residents’ relationship with the previously decrepit recreation center.

Metal Mesh Facade
To further reiterate the formal agenda, 3 different primitive shapes are projected back onto the building, each creating a layer of colored metal mesh. The projections lead to misreadings of the initial primitive shapes through moments of distortion and slippages. The layering of different projections are strategically configured to provide more or less shading, depending on the program underneath.
